Do you make plans for the future? Dream about what your going to do, what house your going to live in, your job, your kids names, your pets, your lifestyle, your location?
I sure do. I have a paradise-like dream in my head of what my young adult life is going to be like (I havnt gotten any further than the early twentys yet 😅)
I day dream of my little haven and my slow restful lifestyle. I love mentaly creating images of what my house will look like. Its one of my favourite pastimes!
And then last week James 4 popped my bubble.
Listen to this verse:
” Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. – James 4 :13-14
A mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
We make all these grand plans- plans borne from our own desires and wants. But we don’t know what tomorrow will bring.
What does God say we should do?
“Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” -James 4:15-17
We can still have our dreams. Our desires. Our ideal lives. But instead of making them the solid plan, we need to give them to God. Hand it over. And be prepared to do what God wants.
He has a divine plan for your life. He has a perfect way in which He plans to use you.
And I know that God cares for our wants and needs. But just like a kind father doesn’t always give his child everything they want every time, so God doesn’t always give us everything we want on the spot.
Just like if a father gave his child anything and everything they want, they would turn into a spoiled brat who thinks they can have anything.
Sometimes fathers have to say no. And that goes for our Heavenly Father too.
So make your dream. But remember to hand it over to God and obey Him over worldly desires.
