who am i?

Who am I?

Its a question ive been asking, a meaning ive been chasing, something thats brought me sobbing on my bedroom floor too many times.

Who is Selah Valentine?

Sometimes I think my identity is based on worldly things like clothes or looks or size.

Ive gone through periods where I believe its based on my friends, my status, how much people like me.

Or maybe its the good deeds I do? How proud I make my parents? How generous I am?

And then one day I went on a soul searching journey. It wasnt a short thing, it wasnt easy and plenty of tears and frustration were involved.

But it was worth it.

Im pretty sure I figured out who I am, and its so much better than I could ever have imagined.

I am who God says I am.

And you know what he says? Ill show you.

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” John 1:12

I am a child of God.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” Psalm 139:14

I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 corinthians 5:17

A new creation

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession” 1 Peter 2:9

Chosen and loved

For I am convinced that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God” Romans 8:38-39

Unconditionally loved.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works”

Gods workmanship

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Romans 8:1

Freed from condemnation

“I no longer call you servants… I have called you friends” John 15:15

A friend of Jesus.

And I could go on and on… there are so so many scriptures I could quote.

But they all affirm the one message I have learnt.

I am who God says I am.

Not who I say, not who my friends say, not who my parents say, not who the world says.

I am Gods. And he loves me.

Just think about that.

I, [insert your name] am a child of God, and I am loved, freed, a child of him, forgiven, a friend and so much more. I am Gods.

If your struggling with identity, questioning who you are, I hope this connected with you. I hope you look up these scriptures yourself, and maybe make an Who I Am Board (posting on that soon!).

You are precious sister. I hope you find your identity, just like I did.

Selah xx
