Transformed in His Image

When you go to read the Old Testament, what do you usually think of it as? Do you naturally assume its outdated and the New Testament overrules it? Do you prefer to read the New Testament because it’s more relevant?

I’ll admit, I do that too. I get excited and dive into the New Testament; but when I read the Old Testament I diss it as outdated and not relevant.

And don’t get me wrong- there is a lot of stuff in the Old Testament which yes, changed when Jesus came. Jesus gave us a new way to live. So we don’t need to take everything in the Old Testament as solid rules.

Does that mean its not relevant? that we shouldn’t read it?

There is a passage in 2 Timothy 3: “All Scripture is inspired by God.”

In the original Greek translation, inspired by God actually translated to the Greek word theopneustos which means God-breathed.

All Scripture is God-breathed. All of it. Not just the New Testament.

God is in every piece of Scripture, and so that answers our question. Yes, the Old Testament is still relevant to us nowadays.

Maybe not every passage should be taken literally, like purity laws in Leviticus. But that dousn’t mean that its not important. The Old Testament carves the pathway for Jesus. Think about it, if Jesus just showed up, and we didn’t have any of the context of the Old Testament, would it make ANY sense at all?

No it wouldn’t.

It is important to read and mediate on all Scripture.
